Our reading is derived from what is actually built in each district today, not from the code string — a code like R-15 means different things in different Connecticut towns. It is an estimate, and the regulations linked above are the authority.

Where these names come from

Read the consolidated Town of Hamden Zoning Regulations PDF (https://www.hamden.com/DocumentCenter/View/12083), adopted 7/25/2017, effective 8/17/2017 (base form-based regulations first effective 1/1/2010), 192 pp. plus the Article IX appendix of retained pre-2010 Planned Unit Development rules. 'R5' is the unhyphenated spelling of the ordinance's R-5; Section 200 names it 'Residential R-5 Zone' and gives no further descriptive name beyond 'higher density residential development', so the label is 'Residential', consistent with how R-1 through R-4 are labeled in this index. 'R5 N' could not be traced: full-text search of the regulations (including the Article IX appendix, which preserves the older R-1..R-6 scheme) finds no 'R5 N', 'R-5 N', 'R5N' or 'R-5N' in any spelling, and the official Zoning District Map (DocumentCenter/View/12121, effective 2019) carries only plain 'R5' labels - no N-suffixed variant. It is not a documented overlay either: Hamden's overlays are APA, CAM, OSD and the Spring Glen Village District (SGVD), none abbreviated 'N', and 'NC' is the Newhall Center special district, not a suffix. The suffix looks like an artifact of the assessor's own file (it occurs alongside a matching 'R4 N'), so it is returned unmatched rather than guessed.
