Our reading is derived from what is actually built in each district today, not from the code string — a code like R-15 means different things in different Connecticut towns. It is an estimate, and the regulations linked above are the authority.

Where these names come from

Source: Town of Darien Zoning Regulations PDF (darienct.gov/DocumentCenter/View/6613), 317 pages. First adopted effective December 10, 1925; current text adopted May 25, 1999; last revised May 10, 2026. District list is taken verbatim from Subsection 311 'Zone Classifications', which is the ordinance's own authoritative roster (22 zones, in its stated order of restrictiveness), cross-checked against the Article IV/V/VII section headings. Where Subsection 311 and a section heading differ slightly (e.g. 311 calls DBR and DCR 'Overlay Zone' while Sections 500/570 head them 'Zone'), the Subsection 311 wording is used. Section 430 defines an 'Active Senior Residential Overlay Zone' but assigns it no code and it is absent from Subsection 311, so it is omitted rather than given an invented code. All 10 assessor codes matched: R13/R12/R15 are the ordinance's R-1/3, R-1/2 and R-1/5 with the slash stripped, and RNBD is R-NBD.
